Insulation and thermal performance

One of the strong points of Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT is its thermal insulation. With an R-value of 4.5, it falls into the category of top-of-the-range 3-season mattresses, capable of ensuring good comfort down to light sub-zero temperatures, all with ultra-low weight. It’s clearly one of the best weight/insulation ratios on the market! You can even use it in winter if you go to regions that aren’t too cold.

In the field, it performed very well on cool mountain nights in early autumn. I took it on an autumn bivouac at 2,500m at -2° and didn’t feel the cold at all, combined with the Zenbivy Ultralight bed.

Insulation is homogeneous along the entire length of the mattress: no cold zones under the legs or shoulders, even in the lateral position. This efficiency is the result of the combination of two Therm-a-Rest proprietary technologies:

  • ThermaCapture™, a reflective coating that reflects body heat back to the wearer instead of letting it escape to the ground ;
  • Triangular Core Matrix™, an internal structure of superimposed triangular cells that traps air and limits convection.

This duo works perfectly: heat remains well distributed, and the mattress maintains a stable temperature even when you change position several times during the night. Unlike some more basic models, you don’t get the impression of “cool” zones that appear as soon as you move.

Comfort and ergonomics

Naturally, when you’ve invested in such an ultralight mattress, you’re curious to know whether it will live up to its promises! The good news is that on my very first night, I was really pleased with the comfort level of the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT, which is impressive for such a lightweight mattress.

When inflated, it offers a generous 7.6 cm thickness, enough to sleep without ever feeling the ground, even on slightly uneven or stony ground.

The internal structure ensures even air distribution and therefore good support for the body, with no localized pressure points. The support is firm but pleasant, you don’t sink into the center of the mattress, and the feeling of stability is excellent, whether you sleep on your back, side or stomach. This is a real plus for people who move around a lot during the night… And that’s kind of my case, especially when bivouacking!

After a lot of hesitation when ordering, I opted for the Wide size, which is wider than the Regular size (64cm instead of 51cm), because on other mattresses I often had this feeling of being a little restricted in my movements and of regularly finding myself a little on the side of the mattress. Perhaps because of my feminine morphology with pronounced hips, or because I move around a lot… But in any case, I don’t regret my choice at all , despite the extra weight, because I’ve really gained in comfort.

The 30D nylon coating provides a rather soft feel for this type of technical mattress. It doesn’t cling to the sleeping bag, but remains grippy enough to prevent slipping with every movement. Another plus: the mattress remains silent when you move. No unpleasant creaking or rustling of plastic: a real bonus for me, who’s particularly sensitive to noise.

Weight and compactness

This is clearly one of the major assets of the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT: its impressive lightness and compactness. Few mattresses manage to offer such a high level of comfort for such a low weight.

The Regular Wide version, the one I’m using, weighs in at around 470g (mattress only). A little heavier than the Regular (which would be 370g), but the gain in comfort is real for me.

Another very positive point is the folded volume. The mattress fits into a small bag measuring approximately 28 x 12 cm for the Regular Wide version(23 × 10 cm for the Regular version), the equivalent of a one-liter bottle. So it fits easily into any backpack, whether it’s a trekking bag or a bikepacking pannier.

Inflation and convenience

The mattress is equipped with the WingLock valve. This allows the mattress to be inflated and deflated quickly, without losing air between breaths. The valve turns easily, even with cold/wet fingers or gloves, and the mechanism seems solid enough to withstand repeated handling.

Therm-a-Rest also supplies a pump bag that inflates the mattress without allowing moisture from the breath to get into the mattress. It’s a pain, but it’s useful! I have to tell you that I only used it once, as I then lost the bag… So I go without it and try to dry my mattress thoroughly to get rid of the moisture when I get home.

Deflation is just as simple : just open the valve fully, roll up the mattress, and the air escapes in seconds. The whole thing folds easily into its little storage bag, without having to struggle to get it inside: a great advantage, especially when you’re packing up the bivouac with hands frozen by the morning chill!

Durability

At first glance, the 30D ripstop nylon inspires confidence, although you’ll have to be careful about the ground you lay it on. In any case, it seems more resistant than the previous version of the mattress, whose fabric seemed more fragile to me. The repair kit supplied is also a real plus in the event of a puncture. As far as I’m concerned, no problems to report at the moment… I hope it lasts!

Conclusion

The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT is the benchmark for ultralight hiking and trekking mattresses. It combines lightness, performance and reliability. It’s a substantial investment, but for regular hikers, it’s worth it: comfortable nights guaranteed without weighing down your pack! For my part, I’m won over.
