I've had the pleasure of running on the trail paths of the Calvi-Balagne trail station in north-west Corsica, and can only advise you to do the same if you love trail running. Here are my top 5 reasons to go running there!

1. Take advantage of the marked trails at the trail station

Calvi-Balagne has an On Piste trail station, with courses for trail running as well as mountain biking and Nordic walking. On the trail side, there’s plenty to do, with 23 different routes spread across the region and graded in order of difficulty (blue, green, red and black). So there’s something for everyone, whatever their level.

There are even some fairly rolling routes, even though this is Corsica and therefore always a little steep (which is also what makes the area so charming and interesting for trail running!) And others that really test the calves…!

The circuits on offer have been carefully mapped out by a local team, so you’re sure to find a nice route, which is really nice. The routes are signposted, but I’d advise you to keep track of them on your watch/GPS app, or to follow the route with the On Piste app. Otherwise, I think it’s easy to miss the signs when you’re running.

2. Discover the varied landscapes of Calvi Balagne

Balagne offers a beautiful diversity of landscapes, as I discovered during my stay. I walked 3 different circuits of the Calvi-Balagne trail station, and each place was different from the other.

Depending on what you want to do and how much time you have, you can choose to run along the coastal path, through the Bonifatu forest, on more mountainous and technical trails, or through pretty villages…

There’s plenty of variety, so you can do several different routes without getting bored for a second. Click on the link below for more details, and I’ll tell you all about it on my blog.

3. Visit Calvi

Calvi is a pretty little town by the sea. It makes a good base camp for exploring the region, and you can enjoy the town’s charm along the way. I recommend a stroll through the narrow streets, along the harbor and the beach, and a visit to the imposing Genoese citadel that sits majestically above Calvi.

4. Treat yourself to Corsican gastronomy

When you say trail, you say ravito, right? The good news is that Corsica is a great place to eat! There are plenty of good specialities and traditional dishes to try, either in restaurants or to take away. A great way to recover (if you don’t overdo it!) and, above all, to keep your spirits high 😛

5. Enjoy the Corsican sun in the off-season

I travelled to Corsica at the beginning of November and enjoyed a really pleasant climate. Farewell to the heat of summer, in favor of the mild after-season sun, ideal for running! The city is also much quieter, which personally suited me. The only drawback is that it gets dark earlier, so you’ll just have to think about that before choosing your trail and starting time!
